I have a dream…

September 15, 2008 · 1 Comment

November 2008:

Obama becomes president in a tight raise thanks to Ohio going Blue.

However, the first four years are tough and not that much progress is made except for health care reform (yes!). We painfully pull out of Iraq, slowly and no, it’s not easy. More Americans die serving as a reminder NEVER AGAIN should we wage preemptive war. Obama gets reelected, even though he has not delivered the immense change promised (this is truly impossible–but who are we to criticize lofty ambitions?). Why? Well, the Republicans nominate Mitt Romney and half-way through election it turns out he has been boinking little boys, some of which are actually in his family since his family is, oh yes, that big.

Obama wins by landslide.

7 years later (2015):

The economy is booming, the war in Iraq is finished (although that nation is left in complete ruin, like Lebanon in the 80’s), relations are good with China and with Russia ($$$ does make the world go round) and gay marriage is an amendment. Pro Choice Supreme Court judges outnumber Pro Life (that’s a long stretch, I know)

Meanwhile, Sarah Palin is in jail for tax fraud. Her excuse? “God told me to save that money from this demon-invested federal government and put it towards freeing Alaska from the lower 48.”  Those lower 48 states didn’t really find that to be a valid excuse. John McCain died in 2010 in his sleep. He took some Lunesta and just never work up, so rest assured he wasn’t dreaming about that POW camp. In fact he was found with that weird smile he always has clinched on his face when he tries to hang out with poor people. Cindy has since remarried. Oh and Karl Rove, well he got Alzheimer’s in 2010 and spent 5 years loosing that mind that so tightly wound this country into the mess it was in the 00s. He’s currently hitting effigies of Hillary Clinton (which someone found at an antique store) with a stick in his living room. Bush is riding horses in Texas and has a significant problem with Valium but at this point who cares if he’s stoned out of his mind? Hillary is being called the “Ted Kennedy of the new millennium”—keeping Liberal Democracy alive with an iron fist in Congress.

Oh and in 2015 we’ll be making enough money to enjoy/capitalize on the economic boom brought on by Obama just the way my father was able to send me to college because he invested during the awesomely fruitful mid-Clinton years. I hope to be in a house with solar panels so I’ll never see another gas bill again.

This is my Hope!

Obamacons, Wall E, and “Crystal”–the new “Wolf”?

July 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ah, home from vacation. Back to work. Back to blog, etc.

Researching for work, I came upon my new favorite word: Obamacon. Now we all love a nifty word made up of an Obama-as-prefix, an “Obamism,” if you will. But this one is my fav. Why? Well, first of all if “conservative” can be in same realm, let alone the same TERM as “Obama” that’s a good thing, in regards to, oh, say winning an election (something Democrats haven’t been so good at recently). I’m a liberal, through and through (fuck religion! yay gays! save the poor!), but not everyone else is. That is the beauty of Obamania, that everyone–on the left, on the right, those liberal as fuck, conservative Catholics, and even retired generals (come on Colin Powell, endorse!)–can love the Barackstar.

Oh yeah and one more thing: Obamacon, it sounds like a robot. And I love robots. Agingsnob is snotty about most things culture (music, books, vegetables–broccolini over broccoli, thank you), but not about robots. Hence one of the reasons I went to see Wall-E this weekend, even braving the kiddie pool in Park Slope opening weekend. I’m almost astonished to say it is one of the most charming and beautiful films I’ve seen in quite some time. Some criticize the lack of any dialogue for the first hour. However, has anyone ever seen a classic children’s movie called The Red Balloon? Hmm. Or what about the sumptuously sweet and witty French animation film The Triplettes of Belleville? You can have a G-rated film without idiotic verbatim and children will still respond with laughter. So will adults as in the case of Wall-E.

Wall-E is visually spectacular (duh, it’s Pixar) but it’s the clever writing, reminiscent of early comedies of the 30’s ala Buster Keaton, that really make this movie such a joy to watch. Gina writes a great review, emphasizing just that, along with what a beautiful eco-lesson it is. Oh yeah, and uh, did I mention it’s a love story.

ROBOTS LOVING ROBOTS. How Daft Punk? Also, it’s notable that the female robot EVE (Eee-vaa) is the kick ass heroine of the story–smart, savvy, and yet feminine (really you never thought a robot giggle could be so adorable!). And because she’s a non-human (albeit one shaped a bit like something one might find at Good Vibrations…or the Apple Store), Disney didn’t force her into unrealistic babedom like that Pocohantas as Indian Barbie shit they pulled a few years ago. Bravo on all fronts!

Lastly, on this vacation o’ mine I checked out Crystal Castles live for the first time. Then, on the internets, I kept seeing reviews of the new Crystal Antlers album. Is Crystal the new Wolf? Discuss.

Sonic Youth Art show coming up!

And for the hell of it, inspired by this new information, I thought I would share my new favorite pic from Fashion Week featuring Kim Gordon AND Ryan Adams, an unlikely fashionista.

Adams dresses kind of like Ray and I did in college:

Speaking of Ray and our old Progressive selves, uh, do note how I also have not said anything about how Obama killed in Washington, DC. KILLED. Oh whoops.

Politics, Raves, and the Gangsta Party

February 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

In the last two weeks I have received emails from political organizations like Moveon.org urging me to support Obama on Super Tuesday (today). I’ve also read Caroline Kennedy’s piece in the Times. I even read the New York Post’s endorsement (bizarro).  By far the strangest endorsement, though, was one that I received yesterday via list-serve from The Danger, a party collective that throws raves and spectacles that often involve fire-eating and other circus skills. Think Burning Man and some turntables in a creaky warehouses in Bushwick and you’re not far off visualising THE DANGER.

And then today my friend Ray forwarded me The American Apparel official endorsement email. If you go to the AA website they have a very sexy pic of Barack wearing leather jacket (circa the early 80s). A second later a picture of a young (he was young?) McCain flashes by. Here’s the endorsement:

We urge voters to consider Obama on the Democratic side.We urge voters to consider McCain on the Republican side. Why? Because of their honesty on the issue of immigration, the most significant civil rights concern the country has faced in 50 years.”

So, on your way to to the rave, while clad in sparkly leggings and a gold lame bra, do stop by the polls please. (Please note that this is not in any way to make light of today’s importance. I’m on board for Obama. I just get a kick out of ultra-Progressive ravers and spandex-peddling slimy CEO’s like Dove Charney telling me who to vote for.)

While it seems as though every celebrity has a candidate they are supporting, there are some in the entertainment realm who are still fiercely independent. Such as Snoop Dog, a member of “the gangsta party.” Check him out on Larry King. This is one of my favorite interviews in a long while. “Say it like you mean it!”
